Gold Coast girl Ellen smashes goals in Cairns!

Local triathlete Ellen Guiney is continuing to smash her goals after winning the female category of the Cairns 70.3 last month.

The 24-year-old Gold Coast based athlete, who is sponsored by Lacey Group, said winning this race had always been a goal and after a rough start and a stint in the penalty box, she was ecstatic to cross the finish line in first place.

“I arrived late to Palm Cove and managed to get into transition and set up everything with 15 minutes till start time,” Ellen said.

“The swim felt chaotic, it had taken a while for everyone to settle in and I had just managed to get into a good rhythm when around the 1km mark my swim cap slid off and I had to swim the rest of the leg with no cap.”

Ellen said she had no idea where she was sitting after the swim but recognised some of her competition so knew where she needed to be.

“Within the first 10km’s of the ride I was in a group of 7 people, we were getting a little too close which resulted in me having to go in the penalty box for drafting,” she said.

“Three minutes on the side of the road has never felt so long!”

The rest of the 90km ride Ellen raced fairly reserved, saving her legs for the run she knew she needed to win.

“It was hot humid and windy by the time I got off the bike. I started the run at a four-minute pace and managed to gain first place at 7km.

“I felt comfortable until the 13km mark, but by the time I reached 15km’s my body was starting to hurt.

“Needless to say, I was very happy to turn the final corner and see the smiling faces of my support crew and cross the finish line!”

Lacey Group managing director, Adam Lacey, said helping Ellen achieve her goals is exciting to be a part of.

“I knew there was something special about Ellen when I first watched her race and she continues to go from strength to strength,” Adam said.

“With a business mantra of Building Life and a passion for the sport myself, I believe Ellen is the ideal sports person to represent our brand.”

Ellen completed the course, which comprises a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and a 21km run, in just 4 hours, 33 mins.

Ellen began competing in triathlons three years ago and continues to smash her goals.

“My ultimate goal is to compete professionally in the full Ironman course at Kona and complete it in under 10 hours,” Ellen said.

The full Ironman distance includes a 3.86km swim, 180.2km bike and 42.2km run.
